Mostofa Monowar


Mustafa Monowar is a Bangladeshi artist best known for pioneering the art of puppetry in the country, and is often referred to as the ‘Puppet Man of Bangladesh’. His mediums range from painting and sculpting, but Monwar is also known for his major contributions to TV, radio, and as an educator.

Monwar’s artworks are often defined by their translucency and simplicity, and panoramic beauty, rural life and seasonal change are recurring themes. He began his career as a lecturer at the East Pakistan College of Arts and Crafts, and has served as Director General of Bangladesh Television, Shilpakala Academy, and the National Media Institute over the years. He also served as the Managing Director of FDC.

Monwar has received numerous national and international awards, including an award for graphic design at the All India Fine Arts Competition, Zainul Abedin Gold Medal for ‘his outstanding contribution to painting’, and the Ekushey Padak. He is presently the Chairman of Bangladesh Shishu Academy.
